Our Story

The Corner Cupboard owners, Peter and Gerd Handley started along time ago at a little country Pub called the Royal Oak at Nunnington before moving to the Abbey Inn at Byland Abbey near Coxwold. They transformed this from a beer only drinking pub into what you would call today a gastro Pub described as a great pub serving exceptional food and was well known through the North. Gerds flare for Interiors transformed this place into a relaxed and charming atmosphere with exposed flagged floors, exposed brick work and fabrics mixed in with decorative brick-a-brac adding great charm. This is always going to be in our heart with the fantastic views of the Abbey.

Eager for the next challenge they then moved to a tiny hotel called Ryedale Country Lodge and again this was transformed to the award winning ‘Most Romantic Hotel’ and boasted the stay of Roan Atkinson their daughters favorite Mr. Bean!

This then brings us to the Corner Cupboard where they moved to in June 2004 embracing the 9 to 5 normal life converting a English format restaurant into a bustling day time restaurant with the added experience of an enchanting shop. They are here to stay along with their daughter who has now joined them and not to forget Lillian and Purdy who’ll you’ll meet on arrival when they greet you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
